About

About Cartago

Cartago was founded on a simple but ambitious idea: if we can understand how spinal discs develop and repair, we may be able to change the course of disc degeneration.

Our story

That journey began with the work of spine surgeon and clinician-scientist Dr. Ashish Diwan. In 2008, Dr. Diwan co-authored a study connecting GDF6 mutations with a rare condition that affects spinal development. The research also demonstrated GDF6 expression in the adult intervertebral disc. Cartago is now translating these insights into a potential regenerative treatment for people living with chronic low back pain caused by disc degeneration.
